Wishlist de Mayo!

Here it is the first week of May, can you believe it? This year is flying by.

May happens to be my favorite month for many reasons: The weather is beautiful, the flowers are out in full force, summer is right around the corner, and there’s one other thing…what is it…oh right IT’S MY BIRTHDAY MONTH. Really, I don’t know why we aren’t celebrating already. Here are some items that might be suitable gifts (JUST A SUGGESTION ūüėČ ).

This is just beautiful. Absolut had these pineapples commissioned to promote their new ABSOLUT ELYX vodka, so unfortunately we can’t buy them, but they are gorgeous and I want them. Plus you can put the pineapple top back on and there’s a hole for a copper straw so you can feel like you’re sitting on a tropicopper island and enjoying their signature Pineapple Bump drink.

Maps are fascinating to look at.  Every city is different and recognizable by the web of streets that connect everyone together. Obviously those lines form amazing patterns that are perfect to be etched into glasses. These City Maps glasses are sold individually so you can create your own set of your favorite cities!

Available at Uncommon Goods.

If you, like me, love DOCTOR WHO¬†(and if you don’t, you should give it a try), then these salt & pepper shakers in the shapes of the TARDIS and a Dalek are a must have for your table, because HOW CUTE ARE THEY?

Available at ModCloth.

Lettuce Free Quickie

Okay, it’s Friday, so I’ll make this quick. ¬†We all have things to do, weekends to plan, and happy hours to attend.

I talked about a delicious Greek salad a few days ago, and, you know, as much as I¬†enjoy vegetables, I think my problem with salad is what’s generally the main part of it: the lettuce. ¬†Nothing against lettuce, it’s filling, and a blank canvas for whatever your heart desires t combine it with, but…it’s also kinda the most boring part of a salad. ¬†To me, anyway.

So sometimes you need to make a salad without lettuce, something that can be satisfying and crunchy on its own. This recipe comes from Bon Appetit, and was meant to be served with a succulent pan fried pork cutlet, but I made it on its own, and it was amazing.

All it takes is a fennel bulb, complete with fronds, some asparagus, parsley, a lemon, olive oil, and some salt and pepper.

Thinly slice the fennel, shave the asparagus, which is not as easy as it sounds, I’ll admit, and toss with parsley leaves, fennel fronds, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper, and you have a bright, tart salad that is fantastic on its own, or as a companion to a rich piece of meat.

It’s different, and exciting, and shaving the asparagus gives it a texture you’re not used to from it, and it’s beautiful.

The recipe can be found here!

Beans & Kale & Shrooms & Wine. Repeat: WINE.

The week of healthy eating continues!

Today we’re tackling a super healthy, yet very flavorful, side dish. As I’ve mentioned before, I happen to love kale. It’s so good for you, so green, and is delicious raw or cooked. I also happen to love mushrooms, which are also very good for you and full of healthy vitamins.

It turns out finding a recipe combining these two vegetables is easy, because, I mean, come on, they’re a perfect match! I came across the perfect side dish by Giada, which is healthy, and good amount of flavor. Great for a weeknight or entertaining guests. ¬†Or entertaining guests on a weeknight.

It begins, as most tasty things do, with sauteeing some onions.

Add in chopped green beans and mushrooms and cook for a few minutes.

Oh, and a little white wine. ¬†Did I mention there’s wine? There’s wine.

After the wine cooks out a little bit, we add in some kale, red chili flakes, and some parmesan.

Ta dah! A delicious, healthy side dish, and a great way to get your greens. You could serve it with a nice steak or chicken, or you could even have it with some quinoa I suppose to make it a main dish. However you serve it, enjoy it, and know that you’re doing your body some good!

Oh, also, you’ll have a good amount of wine leftover. Enjoy that too!

Recipe can be found here.

Wishlists From the Past

It’s Wednesday, and let me tell you, that time change has done a number on me this week. Waking up an hour earlier is not fun. ¬†There’s got to be some sort of uptick in coffee sales every year during this time.

Today’s wish list is full of fun items that I’d love to have around my home. Now that I’ve put them all together, apparently I’m very nostalgic this week because they all have to do with the past. ¬†But they say what’s old is new again, right?

When I grab my box of Stretch-Tite¬†plastic wrap out of the drawer, there’s a good chance I will come close to cutting myself on the sharp edge. ¬†So why not get a box that has a slide cutter and is stylish enough to go with your kitchen? With multiple designs to choose from, there’s a Chic Wrap for everyone!

To add to my mug collection I’d like something that reminds me of one of my favorite childhood shows,¬†and this fits the bill. Your day couldn’t possibly start off bad when you’re drinking from this. Coffee in a Half-Shell! (Turtle power!)

Available at Hot Topic.

To be honest, I won these at a white elephant party last Christmas and haven’t had a chance to use them yet. But the weather is warming up and it’s time to break them out to make some treats straight from Tatooine. ¬†Who wants to eat a popsicle off a boring wood stick when you can use these and feel the force within?

Available at Think Geek (of course!)

4. STARBURST DRINKING GLASSES Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 10.38.33 AM

The Franciscan Starburst is possibly my favorite mid-century pattern (I have a lot of favorite mid-century patterns). It captures the fun of the atomic age and the playful future that they imagined back then. The one with flying cars and holographic phones. ¬†Hopefully we’re not too far off from those things, but until then, these glasses will keep the dream alive. And also make your cocktails look more fun.

Wishlist(ing it was Summer) Wednesday!

It’s Fake Spring here in Los Angeles, at least that’s what I call it. ¬†It always seems to come in February, when the weather gets really warm and all the trees and flowers think “Ahhh it’s Spring! Let’s bloom!” ¬†So the flowers come out, and everything looks pretty, and then… it rains and it’s all washed away. ¬†But real Spring will be here soon enough, and then the flowers will last and bring joy to our lives.

This faux-season makes me dream of Summer. ¬†Days at the beach, warm summer nights, and the return of summer fruits¬†are what inspired this week’s wishlist.

Peaches are delicious in so many ways. ¬†They’re heavenly raw, grilled, frozen, stewed, really in any form. ¬†Of course, combine that with something rich like bourbon, and then make it a jam, and you pretty much win everything. ¬†M. Greenwood Jams has created such a jam and it lands at the top of the list this week. ¬†(Sidenote: if you come across their three-pepper jam, get a few jars. ¬†You won’t be sorry.)

Buy it here: M. Greenwood Bourbon Peach Jam.

I can’t go a day without coffee. I mean, I can, but it’s not pretty. It wasn’t always¬†that way, but hey, it happens.¬†A dash of coffee can be a nice touch to anything chocolatey, it accentuates its flavor. ¬†When it comes to sweet treats,¬†many bakers will tell you that salt brings out the flavor of sweet things as well. ¬†Combine the two? Well, I can’t wait to sprinkle it on every dessert I have this year. They say it’s good in marinades too, which to me means more excuses to eat¬†steak.

Get it here: Laguna Salt.

Bright, sunny beaches are everywhere in L.A., and whether it be lemonade or limoncello, what better way to enjoy a refreshing drink, than from these glasses that will remind you of laying on one of those beaches, at any time of the year?

Grab them from Sisters of Los Angeles: Beach Rocks Glasses.

I mean, come on. Do I really need to say anything about these?  Adorable!

Take them home at CB2.

You might think a candle made to capture the essence Los Angeles would be gross, like “smog with a hint of sagebrush and whiff of tacos.” ¬†But this candle, designed for Barney’s Beverly Hills, actually manages to capture the nicer smells of L.A.: The palm trees, the flowers, and the ocean. ¬†It’s guaranteed to make your home smell warm and inviting, and be a great conversation starter at your Eating Table.
